"The Venetian" by Edward Burton

oil 9.5"x7.5"
This is for Liz Holm whose moleskin subject matter is portraits. This elegant looking woman was spotted on a vaporetto (water bus) in Venice and her features were so striking I just had to take a photo of her.

  4. I just had the best time letting my eyes travel all over the contours of her face, (what amazing cheekbones and eyelids!) and across the lovely gray hair and circling around down to her shoulders with the leather straps and herringbone pattern - I like the fadeout near your signature. This is just wonderful, Edward! I always adore your portraits.

  5. Oh what a fabulous portrait. I just love how you capture her gaze also, it makes you wonder what she's thinking about. It's a very elegant and mesmerizing piece you did. I can see her looking down the canals on the vaporetto.

  6. I can definitely see why you wanted to take this woman's picture and paint her. We all have a story to tell and because of her gaze, her dress, and the overall way she is carrying herself, I wonder what her story is. Edward, this is such a sensitive portrait, beautiful warm color palette and so well done.

  10. Hey, that's Aunt Flo when she went to Italy last year! Kidding. Whoever this lady is, you have captured a moment of wistful reverie that speaks volumes. Every feature of this portrait sets off "well done" bells & whistles. Simply great, Ed!

  13. Love it, my friend! The three distinct areas/elements, especially the hair and coat, have such great patterns that work well with one another.
