Great Horned Owls

I thought I'd keep in step with Dean's family theme for James Parker's book, so I painted these two natural born killers...ha, from photos I took of them in my backyard last May. Judging by all the duck parts I found in our yard, I think they too would have LOVED your paintings Mr. Haven. James, I know you are partial to birds with all the beautiful paintings you do of them, so I hope this works for you. Cheers my friend.

  4. These are fantastic, Vern. How amazing you get to see these beauties in your own back yard. I love the fluffy feathers on the baby so much. Both incredibly well done!

  6. Vern, these two paintings are wonderful, I absolutely love this sophisticated color palette, and just the right amount of green, wow! There are so many things I like in each, in the first, it's the contrast of the vertical strokes in the tree bark compared with the horizontal brushstrokes in the owl and the 2nd one, has to be the texture of the soft feathers. I, too, can't wait to see your paintings in person.

  7. So, That's where my ducks have been disappearing to!
Great job, Vern. To me,your paintings carry through the nature of owls. Dark, secretive, and "watch out all you little critters".
    Love it!

  9. Vern, there's a real fluidity about these that I love. I don't know how you achieved it but there's a flowy feeling to both. I especially also love the eye expression you captured in that lower one that reminds me of how some teachers and other authority figures in my life have looked at me over the years. Love it! Your palette is also wonderful.
