James - Hummers & Hawks for Dean

I've had Dean Haven's journal for a while. Still in somewhat of a slump, I grabbed my brushes and dragged myself to the matter at hand. Dean left the topic open for whatever came to mind. Birds came to mind. So I did two paintings in his journal....one of an ostrich and the other, a penguin. It sure seems like my skills are a still a little rusty, cause here's how they turned out.

  1. I love your sense of humor and I'm thrilled to see you back painting. These two for Dean are especially wonderful. One of the things I really like here is that beautiful shadow falling across the hawk's eye, very well done!

  2. Fabulous pieces James.
I love how the original birds you choose where not flying ones and the ones you did are INCREDIBLE flying birds.
Both are wonderful but that hawk' beak and eye is so perfect !

  5. Rusty!? RUSTY??!! Yeah right!!!
James, these are amaaazing. Photographic realism but with an ethereal intangible something added. (I hate the way I never can put into words what I'm seeing!) But the hummingbird one, especially, to my eye has such poetry to it -- an Asian feel in the design and the curve of his body line is so poignant. Or some word like that. Really... just beautiful. You outdid yourself!

  10. James, I just came back in and looked at this again, today. And I simply HAD to re-comment on the hawk. The background and plumage markings are remarkable! Way to go!!
