Portrait of Sheila Tajima

6 x 6 oil on canvas
I saw Sheila Tajima's black and white baby photo with her tiny kimono and her luminous expression and thought it surely should be a painting. I almost added color but opted to paint it as I saw it. So this is my offering to Sheila for The Flying Moleskins project. I hope she enjoys it. I have changed it slightly since last night and I accidentally deleted my blog post with five wonderful comments (which were greatly appreciated). I will figure it out again eventually. Sheila was a gorgeous baby and I have only vaguely nodded to her beauty here. Angela, I will do your book next and then it will be off to you!

  1. Camille, this portrait is wonderful. I love the way you made Sheila fill the painting, as though her little body is framing the format or I guess in other words, great composition! It is perfect and Sheila will love it!

  3. This looks like the photo not a painting.
Good idea to keep it black and white.
    What a beautiful piece.

  5. I love this piece Camille...great composition. Using only black and white sends us back to another time and place.

  8. Thanks, everyone. Sheila already commented but unfortunately hers was lost when the post was deleted accidentally (along with those of Dana, Adebanji, Irit and one other I think?) But thanks for those comments, too! :-)

  9. I think I had her looking just slightly cross-eyed -- I've fixed that since then although this photo is before I fixed it. Just for the record! :-)
