Work In Progress....for Angela, by Dana

This is my submission for Angela Elledge's Flying Moleskin book. Angela is a gifted fellow artist/blogger who works at the West Dallas Community School. Angela's art is often of pets as well as children from the school.

The title suggests that though the portrait is a work in progress, so is the child.

It was a delight to create this piece for Angela, one who understands that we are all works in progress!

  3. On very, very rare occasions, I have been known to be left speechless and this Dana, is one of those rare moments. I don't even know how to begin to thank you for your gorgeous painting and your sweet sentiments about our school. I love the children and the families so much, it truly is a privilege to work at WDCS. Your concept, tied in with the title, is spot on! We talk a a lot about habits and making right choices, the children are often surprised to hear that I/we (adults) also struggle with doing the right thing, we truly are a work in progress.

Last week was our first week back teaching. As I was teaching my older students, discussing the time periods and projects we would study this year, each class was given an opportunity to ask questions. I love that the main question in each class was not about our subject matter, instead each class was genuinely interested in our moleskins. They wanted to know if I had received any new books this summer, what I had painted, what was painted in my book, and will I please bring more books for them to see! As soon as my painting is dry, I will be bringing Vern's book to school to show them all of your beautiful paintings. (I'm the only one who handles the books, I promise they do not touch) Thank you all for being such an inspiration to them, they look forward to seeing your artwork and are always in awe of the talent that is represented in the F.M. group.

This little girl could be any of my little students, but the first person I thought of was a little 2nd grader named Amiracle. I was so confused, I could not understand how you could possibly have seen a picture of Amiracle.

Well, for someone who was left speechless, I guess I found something to say after all. Dana, I am so touched by your gorgeous painting, thank you so very much. Wow!

  6. Dana this is one of your best pieces. You captured Angela perfectly, and I love the contact the young artist has with her subject. There is an obvious affection as she touches her teacher's face. Beautiful piece.

  7. Dana, you really did capture that beautiful expression we see in Angela's eyes (I think that is the trickiest part) in addition to it being a dead-wringer portrait of her whole self. What I love especially is that this shows the child giving back to her as a thank you for her inspiration to become an artist, painting a favorite teacher. This is just wonderful, and has a monumental feeling about it.
